Algeria will travel to Gaborone without their captain Riyad Mahrez for the second matchday of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Botswana. The absence of the Manchester City star was confirmed by head coach Djamel Belmadi just before the team’s departure, dealing a significant blow to the defending African champions.

According to Belmadi, Mahrez will miss the encounter due to a personal matter that requires his immediate attention. The decision was made to allow the winger time to address the issue, ruling him out of Monday’s fixture at the Botswana National Stadium.

Mahrez’s absence is a notable setback for the Fennecs. As captain and one of the team’s most influential figures, he plays a central role in Belmadi’s tactical system. His creativity, vision, and ability to unlock defenses have often made the difference in tight matches. Beyond his technical contributions, Mahrez also provides leadership and experience to a squad still riding high from their Africa Cup of Nations triumph.

The former Leicester City player once again demonstrated his importance in Algeria’s emphatic 5-0 victory over Zambia in their opening qualifier. He was heavily involved in the attacking play and delivered the assist for Baghdad Bounedjah’s fifth goal, capping off an already dominant performance by the hosts. His presence on the right flank consistently troubled the Zambian defense, creating space and opportunities for his teammates.

Without their captain, Belmadi will now have to reshuffle his options. The Algerian squad still boasts considerable depth, with several attacking players capable of stepping up. However, replacing Mahrez’s influence and consistency will not be an easy task. His ability to dictate the tempo, carry the ball forward, and produce decisive moments is difficult to replicate.

Despite the setback, Algeria remain favorites heading into the clash with Botswana. Confidence within the camp is high following their commanding start to the qualifying campaign. The comprehensive win over Zambia not only secured three points but also sent a strong message to their group rivals about their ambitions to defend their continental crown.

The trip to Botswana, however, will present a different challenge. Playing away from home in unfamiliar conditions can be tricky, and the hosts will be eager to capitalize on Mahrez’s absence. Algeria will need to maintain their focus and collective strength to secure another positive result.

The match between Botswana and Algeria is scheduled for Monday at 7pm GMT at the Botswana National Stadium. The Fennecs will aim to continue their strong momentum and move closer to qualification, even without their inspirational captain leading the charge on the pitch.
