Senegal were dealt an early scare during their Africa Cup of Nations 2021 qualifying match against Eswatini when star forward Sadio Mané picked up an injury just two minutes into the game. The Liverpool winger appeared to hurt his thigh in the opening moments of the encounter, raising immediate concerns for both the national team and his club.

Despite the discomfort, Mané chose to continue playing and tried to push through the pain during the first half. His determination allowed him to remain on the pitch for the remainder of the opening period, but the Senegalese technical staff opted not to take any risks. At halftime, head coach Aliou Cissé decided to substitute him as a precautionary measure, prioritizing the player’s health over the remainder of the match.

Given Mané’s importance to both Senegal and Liverpool, the incident quickly sparked fears of a potentially serious injury that could sideline him for several weeks. However, early reports suggest that the situation may not be as worrying as initially thought.

According to Record newspaper, the issue appears to be minor rather than a significant muscular problem. The scare is believed to be more precautionary than alarming, offering relief to fans and staff alike. This reassuring update was later supported by Aliou Cissé himself during his post-match press conference.

The Senegal coach played down the severity of the knock and remained optimistic about Mané’s recovery. He explained that the winger had simply felt discomfort in his leg and that the substitution was mainly to avoid aggravating the problem.

“He injured his leg. I hope it’s nothing serious. But at first glance, I think it should be okay. With a little rest and massage, I hope he’ll be fine with the help of the doctors at his club, Liverpool,” Cissé said.

These comments indicate that the technical staff preferred caution, especially considering Mané’s busy schedule and the physical demands placed on him at both club and international levels. Rather than risk worsening the injury, Senegal chose to protect their key player.

Mané is now expected to return to Liverpool earlier than planned so he can undergo further assessment and receive treatment from the club’s medical team. With proper care and rest, he should be back to full fitness soon.

For Senegal, the hope is that their star attacker will recover quickly and be available for upcoming fixtures, while Liverpool will also be monitoring his condition closely ahead of their domestic and European commitments.
