Togo managed a 1-1 draw against Kenya in Nairobi on Monday during the second round of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. With this result, the two teams remain close in Group G, separated by just a single point.
Kenya took the lead in the first half, but Togo responded in the second half, salvaging a point with a well-taken equalizer. The result gives Togo their first point of the campaign, while Kenya moves to two points in the group standings.
After the match, Harambee Stars coach Francis Kimanzi admitted his surprise at Togo’s approach. “We came for the three points. That’s why after they opened the scoring, we kept pushing forward,” Kimanzi said in a press conference.
He also highlighted Togo’s tactical approach: “They overused long balls to their attackers. They had tall players up front, and that caused us a lot of problems. We did our best, but it wasn’t enough.”
With Group G still wide open, all four teams remain within striking distance as the qualifiers continue.
