Ivory Coast secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Niger on Sunday in the opening round of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, but the Elephants struggled to assert their usual dominance. Despite controlling much of the game, the Ivorian side found it difficult to break down a well-organized Niger defense and ultimately relied on a penalty converted by Franck Kessié in the 68th minute to claim the three points.
After the match, captain Serge Aurier reflected on the performance, acknowledging that the team could have handled the game more efficiently. “We could have opened the scoring earlier to make the match easier for ourselves. That wasn’t the case,” he said.
Despite the challenges, Aurier emphasized the importance of starting the campaign with a win. “The most important thing was to start with a victory, especially after the first matchday of the 2019 AFCON qualifiers. We are happy to have won, in front of a crowd that came to support us,” he added.
With this result, Ivory Coast takes an early lead in Group K and will now turn their attention to their next fixture away against Ethiopia, aiming to build momentum and continue their qualifying campaign on a positive note.
