Ivory Coast’s opening match of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Niger proved far more complicated than expected. Although the Elephants managed to secure a 1–0 win at home, the narrow result left a mixed feeling, with controversy and internal tension overshadowing the three points.

On paper, the clash seemed favorable for the Ivorians, who were clear favorites. However, Niger put up strong resistance and made life difficult for the hosts throughout the encounter. Ivory Coast struggled to impose their rhythm and found it hard to break down a disciplined and well-organized defense.

The decisive moment of the match came in the second half and quickly became the center of attention. In the 66th minute, the referee, Angolan official Joao Amado Muanda, awarded a penalty to the Elephants after a cross appeared to be deflected inside the box. From the stands, the decision looked debatable, and television replays only intensified the controversy. The footage suggested that the Niger defender had not actually touched the ball, casting serious doubt over the legitimacy of the call.

Despite the protests, the penalty stood. Franck Kessié stepped up and calmly converted from the spot to give Ivory Coast the lead. That goal ultimately decided the match, handing the Elephants a valuable but disputed victory.

Yet the refereeing controversy was not the only talking point of the evening. Earlier in the first half, Ivory Coast had already been awarded another penalty, this time with no real dispute over the foul. What followed, however, surprised both fans and observers.

After being brought down, Nicolas Pépé initially took responsibility and grabbed the ball, clearly intending to take the kick himself. But his teammate Max-Alain Gradel intervened. Following a brief exchange, the more experienced Toulouse forward snatched the ball away and insisted on taking the penalty. The unexpected change seemed to unsettle the situation. Gradel’s effort was ultimately saved by goalkeeper Daouda Kassaly, wasting a golden opportunity to put the hosts ahead.

The episode sparked discussions about hierarchy and communication within the team, as such disagreements are rarely seen during crucial moments. It also reflected a lack of composure that nearly cost Ivory Coast dearly.

In the end, the Elephants walked away with the win, but the performance and the circumstances surrounding it left room for improvement. While the three points were secured, the refereeing debate and the missed first-half penalty ensured that the victory felt anything but convincing.
