Senegal secured an important away victory against eSwatini this Sunday on matchday two of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, overcoming a difficult first half to claim a convincing 4–1 win after the break. Despite the final scoreline, the encounter was far from straightforward, as the Lions initially struggled to impose themselves before eventually asserting their superiority.
Facing a determined home side, Aliou Cissé’s men found it hard to settle into their rhythm during the opening 45 minutes. eSwatini defended compactly and disrupted Senegal’s build-up play, preventing the visitors from creating clear-cut chances. The Lions lacked sharpness and fluidity, and their dominance in possession did not translate into real danger in front of goal. As a result, the teams went into halftime level, leaving Senegal with work to do.
After the restart, however, the match took on a completely different complexion. More aggressive, more direct, and sharper in their movements, Senegal raised their intensity and began to stretch the opposition. The tactical adjustments and renewed determination quickly paid off, as the Lions found the breakthrough and never looked back.
Once ahead, Senegal played with greater confidence and freedom, stringing together faster combinations and exploiting spaces in the eSwatini defense. Their attacking quality made the difference, and the goals followed in quick succession. The home side, unable to cope with the increased pressure, gradually faded as the visitors took full control of proceedings.
By the final whistle, Senegal had turned a tense contest into a comfortable 4–1 victory, underlining their status as one of the favorites in the qualifying campaign. The strong second-half performance highlighted the team’s depth, discipline, and ability to respond under pressure.
After the match, head coach Aliou Cissé expressed his satisfaction with both the result and the attitude shown by his players. He praised their maturity and mental strength, particularly in challenging away conditions.
“It’s a great victory and this Senegal team showed great maturity; it’s never easy to win in Africa,” he said.
The coach also emphasized the importance of commitment and fighting spirit when playing on the continent.
“In Africa, you always have to show aggression and commitment, otherwise you won’t succeed, and that’s what the players did in this away game,” Cissé added.
This success marks Senegal’s second consecutive win in the qualifiers, following their earlier victory over Congo. With six points from two matches, the Lions have made a strong start to their campaign and confirmed their ambitions of comfortably securing a place at the next Africa Cup of Nations.
