South Africa’s campaign at the 2019 Women’s World Cup ended in disappointment, with the team finishing their group stage without a single point. In their final match on Monday, Banyana Banyana were convincingly defeated 4-0 by Germany, marking their third consecutive loss in the tournament.
The German side dominated from the start, with goals from Leupolz (14’), Dabritz (29’), Popp (40’), and Magull (58’) ensuring a comprehensive victory. Despite their efforts, the South African players struggled to break through Germany’s organized defense and were unable to register a goal.
With this result, South Africa concluded Group B with zero points, highlighting the steep learning curve they faced against some of the world’s strongest teams. While the results were harsh, the experience provided valuable lessons for the development of women’s football in the country, emphasizing the need for growth at both the tactical and technical levels.
The tournament may have been challenging, but the exposure and experience gained by the squad could serve as a foundation for future international competitions.
