Spain Overcomes South Africa 3-1 in Women’s World Cup Opener
Spain defeated South Africa 3-1 on Saturday in Group B of the 2019 Women’s World Cup, in a match marking Banyana Banyana’s first-ever appearance at the tournament.
South Africa took an early lead when Thembi Kgatlana curled a shot into the top corner in the 25th minute, giving the debutants hope of a historic upset. Spain responded in the second half, with Jennifer Hermoso converting a penalty in the 69th minute to level the score. Hermoso added a second penalty in the 82nd minute after a VAR review, and La Roja sealed the victory through Patri Guijarro’s late strike in the 89th minute.
Despite the 3-1 loss, South Africa impressed in the first half, showing courage and skill against a more experienced Spanish team. Spain now tops Group B on goal difference and will face Germany on June 12.
