Ivory Coast will contest their first semi-final of the 2019 U23 Africa Cup of Nations this Tuesday, hoping to extend an encouraging run that saw them perform solidly throughout the group stage. However, the Young Elephants face a significant setback ahead of this crucial encounter, as they will be forced to cope without two of their most important players, Christian Kouamé and Ibrahim Sangaré.
After navigating the opening round with determination and consistency, the Ivorians now face a much tougher test in the knockout phase. The stakes are higher, and the absence of two key figures could weigh heavily on the team’s ambitions of reaching the final and securing qualification for the Olympic Games.
Christian Kouamé’s absence is a particularly harsh blow. The Genoa striker, one of the side’s main attacking threats, suffered a serious injury during the group stage. Medical examinations confirmed a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, effectively ending his participation in the tournament. His club announced the news in an official statement last Saturday, adding that the player would undergo surgery on Monday. The injury not only rules him out of the semi-final but is also likely to keep him sidelined for several months, dealing a major setback to both his club and country.
Kouamé’s pace, movement, and ability to finish had made him a crucial part of Ivory Coast’s attacking system. Losing such a player at this stage of the competition inevitably weakens the team’s offensive options and forces the coaching staff to rethink their strategy.
Midfielder Ibrahim Sangaré will also miss the decisive clash, though for different reasons. Unlike Kouamé, Sangaré has not been ruled out through injury but has been recalled by his club, Toulouse FC. His temporary release to participate in the tournament covered only the second and third group matches, and he is now required back in France to resume training.
The Ivorian Football Federation confirmed his departure in an official statement, explaining that the midfielder would leave Cairo to rejoin his club immediately. As a result, he will not be available for the semi-final and could also miss a potential final.
Sangaré’s absence deprives the team of a strong and reliable presence in midfield. Known for his physicality, ball recovery, and ability to dictate tempo, he played a vital role in maintaining balance between defense and attack.
Despite these setbacks, Ivory Coast must regroup quickly as they prepare to face Ghana in a high-stakes encounter. The match is scheduled for Tuesday at 2 p.m. GMT at the Cairo Military Academy Stadium, where the Elephants will aim to overcome adversity and keep their title hopes alive.
