The U20 national teams that qualified for the last Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Niger will participate in the football tournament at the 2019 African Games, scheduled to take place in Morocco from August 19 to 31.
This decision was confirmed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), which explained the adjustment was necessary due to the rescheduling of the final round of the U23 AFCON qualifiers. Originally set for June, the qualifiers will now take place in September to avoid clashing with the 2019 AFCON in Egypt, ensuring that teams and players are not overburdened during the continental championship.
Previously, the tournament had been contested by U23 teams, but with the change, the U20 sides have been invited to compete. Among the nations set to participate are Nigeria, Burundi, Ghana, South Africa, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Senegal. These teams will travel to Morocco to contend for honors at the African Games, offering young talents a key opportunity to gain international experience ahead of future continental competitions.
