Tension surrounds the 2019 AFCON opening match between Egypt and Zimbabwe, set for Friday, as the Zimbabwean squad threatens to boycott over unpaid bonuses. Reports from Newsday indicate that some players refused to train on Thursday, raising concerns for both Zimbabwean authorities and tournament organizers.
A meeting is ongoing between Khama Billiat’s teammates and the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA). ZIFA has confirmed that the issues have been recognized and that a solution is near, with board member Philemon Machana stating: “Negotiations are ongoing, but we haven’t had time to announce it. As we speak, ZIFA has signed contracts with all the players.”
The situation remains delicate, just hours before the tournament kicks off.
