Ivory Coast’s Elephants suffered a surprise defeat against a well-organized Ugandan side on Saturday in Abu Dhabi, losing 1-0 in a friendly ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
Despite fielding their full attacking lineup, including Max-Alain Gradel, Jonathan Kodjia, and Nicolas Pépé, the Elephants struggled to break down Uganda’s disciplined defense. The Ivorian team also showed vulnerabilities in midfield and lapses in their defensive organization. The decisive moment came in the 35th minute when a handball by Serge Aurier inside the penalty area led referee Abdulrazaq Ibrahim Al Marzouqi to award a penalty. Farouk Miya converted the spot-kick, giving the Uganda Cranes the lead and ultimately the victory.
Ivory Coast now looks ahead to their final test match before AFCON 2019, scheduled for Wednesday against Zambia. This game will be crucial for the Elephants to adjust tactics, improve cohesion in midfield, and fine-tune defensive organization ahead of the tournament in Egypt.
The loss highlights the need for Ivory Coast to strengthen their balance between attack and defense, ensuring that key players like Gradel, Kodjia, and Pépé can operate effectively while maintaining solidity at the back. Lessons learned from this defeat will be central as coach Ibrahima Kamara prepares the squad for the challenges of the Africa Cup of Nations.
