With the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) just weeks away, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced the list of referees who will officiate at the tournament in Egypt, running from June 21 to July 19, 2019. A total of 56 officials have been selected, comprising 26 main referees and 30 assistant referees, reflecting a mix of experience and regional representation. Among the nations with the strongest presence on the list are host country Egypt and Tunisia, each contributing five referees to the officiating pool.

This year’s selection is particularly noteworthy for the absence of Egyptian referee Gehad Grisha. The official has been suspended for six months due to a controversial performance during the first leg of the CAF Champions League final between Wydad Casablanca and Espérance de Tunis. His suspension has drawn attention, underscoring the importance of consistent standards at the continental level. However, the tournament will still feature some of Africa’s most respected referees, including Bakary Gassama from Gambia and Bamlak Tessema from Ethiopia, both of whom bring extensive international experience and credibility to the officiating team.

The referees selected for AFCON have been preparing rigorously for the competition. Prior to final selection, all officials participated in an extended training course held in Rabat, Morocco, from April 28 to May 5, 2018. This course covered fitness, match management, and the latest updates on CAF regulations. In addition, those officially appointed for the 2019 tournament will undergo a second preparatory session in Egypt, starting June 12. This course will include physical testing, technical briefings, and a refresher on recent rule changes, ensuring that the referees are fully ready to manage high-stakes matches across Africa’s premier football tournament.

The 2019 AFCON will take place in six stadiums spread across four Egyptian cities, showcasing the country’s ability to host a major international football event. The venues will host matches ranging from the group stage through the final, providing a stage not only for Africa’s best footballing talent but also for the referees tasked with maintaining fairness, discipline, and the smooth flow of the games. With high-profile clashes expected, including matches featuring defending champions and continental heavyweights, the role of referees will be crucial in determining outcomes and ensuring the tournament maintains its integrity.

CAF’s meticulous approach to referee selection and preparation highlights the organization’s commitment to professional standards and the growing importance of officiating in African football. By investing in training and selecting referees with experience at the highest levels, CAF aims to minimize controversies and support the smooth operation of the tournament.

As the countdown to kickoff continues, the focus will not only be on the players and the competing nations but also on the referees who will ensure that the games are conducted fairly and competitively. With 56 officials ready to take charge, including some of Africa’s finest, the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations promises to be an exciting showcase of football talent, discipline, and refereeing excellence.
