Kenya’s 23-man squad for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations has been officially confirmed, with head coach Sébastien Migné finalizing the Harambee Stars’ selection just days before the tournament in Egypt. The French coach made four cuts from his preliminary list: two players, Christopher Mbamba and Brian Mandela, were sidelined due to injury, while two others failed to meet the coaching staff’s performance expectations. The final squad contains no major surprises, featuring the core group that guided Kenya to qualification for the continental tournament.
The team’s preparation continues following a 1–0 victory over Madagascar on Friday, with a final friendly scheduled against DR Congo on June 15 in Spain. This match will serve as the last opportunity for Migné to fine-tune tactics and assess player readiness before the squad departs for Egypt on June 19. The Harambee Stars have been drawn into Group C, where they will face Algeria, Tanzania, and Senegal, presenting a challenging group that will test both experience and cohesion.
In goal, Patrick Matasi of St-George, John Oyemba of Kariobangi Sharks, and Faruk Shikalo of Bandari FC will compete for starting duties, providing a mix of domestic and regional experience. The defensive unit features a blend of local and international talent, with Philemon Otieno and Joash Onyango from Gor Mahia, Musa Mohammed from Nkana FC in Zambia, Joseph Okumu from Real Monarchs in the USA, David Owino from Zesco United in Zambia, Abud Omar from Sepsi in Romania, Bernard Ochieng from Vihiga United, and Eric Ouma from Vasalunds in Sweden. This group combines physicality, versatility, and tactical discipline, crucial for contending with Africa’s elite teams.
The midfield is anchored by Kenya’s star player, Victor Wanyama of Tottenham Hotspur, whose leadership and experience in Europe’s top leagues will be central to the team’s strategy. Supporting him are Dennis Odhiambo (Sofapaka), Erick Johanna (IF Brommapojkarna, Sweden), Ayub Timbe (Beijing Rehne, China), Francis Kahata (Gor Mahia), Ismaël Gonzalez (Las Palmas, Spain), Ovella Ochieng (Vasalunds, Sweden), Paul Were (Trikala, Greece), and Johanna Omollo (Cercle Bruges, Belgium). This midfield unit offers a balance of defensive solidity, creative vision, and attacking support, allowing the team to transition effectively between defense and offense.
Up front, Kenya will rely on Masud Juma (Al-Nasr, Libya), Michael Olunga (Kashiwa Reysol, Japan), and John Avire (Sofapaka) to provide goals and offensive momentum. Olunga, in particular, has been pivotal in the team’s qualification campaign and will be expected to lead the attacking line, linking with midfield and exploiting opportunities in the final third.
With the squad now set, Kenya enters the Africa Cup of Nations focused on cohesion, tactical execution, and resilience. The team will look to build momentum from their recent preparations, including the friendly against DR Congo, while relying on the leadership of Wanyama and the collective effort of both domestic and international players. The Harambee Stars face a challenging Group C, but with experience, preparation, and determination, they aim to compete strongly and make a mark in Egypt.
