Cameroon’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations campaign has suffered a setback with the departure of striker Joël Tagueu. The forward, who had traveled to Egypt with the Indomitable Lions, will no longer participate in the tournament due to a serious medical issue.

Cameroon’s team doctor, Professor William Ngatchou, identified an anomaly in the implantation of a coronary artery, a condition first suspected during medical checks in Qatar and later confirmed in Egypt. The defect carries a significant risk of sudden cardiac events on the field, prompting medical staff to make the difficult decision to withdraw Tagueu from the squad. The news was met with considerable sadness among the Cameroonian team and staff, given the player’s importance and potential contribution to their AFCON campaign.

Following the confirmation of Tagueu’s condition, an appeal has been lodged with CAF to allow Cameroon to name a replacement. The team is now seeking to adjust its squad while maintaining strength and balance ahead of its upcoming matches.

The withdrawal of Tagueu serves as a stark reminder of the importance of player safety, with the Cameroonian staff prioritizing his health over participation. Despite this setback, the Indomitable Lions remain focused on defending their title and adapting to the challenge of competing in one of Africa’s most prestigious football tournaments.
