The African continent is gearing up for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), set to kick off this Friday in Cairo. As hosts and runners-up in the 2017 edition, Egypt arrives with high expectations and the added motivation of playing on home soil.
The Pharaohs have entered the tournament in strong form, highlighted by recent warm-up victories against Tanzania (1-0) and Guinea (3-1). Mexican coach Javier Aguirre expressed confidence in the squad’s preparation, stating, “We started training camp on June 6th and the level we have reached so far is very good. We have been following this team for some time and we know how strong they are.”
Mohamed Salah and his teammates are on an impressive run, with six wins in their last eight matches and only a single defeat. Their consistency and quality make Egypt the overwhelming favorites in Group A, where they will face Uganda, Zimbabwe, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Despite the apparent advantage, the team remains aware of the challenges ahead.
Defender and captain Ahmed Elmohamady highlighted the pressures of competing at home: “The pressure is always there in football, of course with the competition taking place in our country it will be even greater, but it is also a positive thing to play this tournament in front of our fans and we hope to win it.” Elmohamady also cautioned against underestimating the group stage, noting that it “is not as easy as people think,” signaling the team’s respect for all opponents.
With a combination of form, talent, and home support, Egypt is poised to make a strong impact at AFCON 2019. The Pharaohs aim to leverage their momentum and local advantage to pursue continental glory, while Mohamed Salah and his teammates carry the hopes of an entire nation eager to see their team lift the trophy in Cairo.
