The organizing committee of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) announced on Thursday, June 20, that drones will be deployed for aerial surveillance of stadiums during the tournament. Egypt, awarded the hosting rights last November, is set to kick off the competition on Friday amid heightened security concerns. Ensuring the safety of players, officials, and fans remains a top priority, particularly given the ongoing terrorist threats in the region.
The drones will operate at altitudes of several dozen meters above the stadiums and will be equipped with high-definition and thermal imaging cameras. This technology will allow security personnel to monitor crowds in real time, detect any unusual activity, and respond swiftly to potential threats. The use of drones is part of a broader security strategy, complementing on-the-ground measures and reinforcing Egypt’s preparedness to host one of Africa’s most prestigious sporting events.
With the country under a state of emergency, authorities have emphasized that these measures are essential to maintain order and safety during the tournament. The combination of aerial surveillance, advanced imaging, and traditional security protocols aims to ensure that matches proceed without incident, providing fans with a secure environment to enjoy the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
