Zimbabwe could be forced to start the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations without one of its most influential players. Attacking midfielder Khama Billiat is currently struggling with a knee problem and remains doubtful for the Warriors’ opening match of the tournament against host nation Egypt. With only a few days left before the start of the competition, concern is growing within the Zimbabwean camp over the fitness of the Kaizer Chiefs star.
Billiat’s situation has become a major talking point in Zimbabwe’s preparations. The 28-year-old did not feature in Sunday’s international friendly against Tanzania, which ended in a 1–1 draw. His absence immediately raised alarm, especially given his importance to the team’s attacking play. According to staff close to the squad, the former Mamelodi Sundowns player began feeling discomfort late last week and has since been placed under close medical supervision.
The attacking midfielder did not take part in collective training sessions on Friday and Saturday, opting instead for individual treatment and recovery work. The technical staff preferred not to take any risks with their key man and therefore decided to rest him completely for the friendly match. Four days before Zimbabwe’s opening fixture in the Africa Cup of Nations, the uncertainty surrounding his condition continues to cast a shadow over the Warriors’ final phase of preparation.
Khama Billiat is widely regarded as Zimbabwe’s creative engine and one of the few players capable of making the difference at the highest continental level. His pace, dribbling ability and experience in major competitions make him a central figure in coach Welly Mpandare’s plans. Losing him, even temporarily, would be a significant blow for a team that is set to face a daunting challenge in its first match against Egypt, five-time African champions and hosts of the tournament.
Despite the anxiety, early signs suggest that the injury may not be serious. The Zimbabwean newspaper Sunday Mail reported that the problem is minor and that the decision to withdraw him from the friendly match was purely precautionary. The medical staff are said to be taking a careful approach in order to give the player the best possible chance of being fit for the opening game.
Speaking to the Sunday Mail, Warriors coach Welly Mpandare sought to reassure supporters while confirming that Billiat remains under observation. “Khama has a slight knee problem and is being monitored by the team doctor,” the coach explained. “That’s why he didn’t practice with the rest of his teammates on Friday night and was also rested for Saturday’s training session. He has an evaluation session scheduled for Monday with the doctor.”
This medical assessment is expected to provide a clearer picture of Billiat’s condition and determine whether he can resume full training with the group. The coaching staff are hopeful that the evaluation will be positive and that their star midfielder will recover in time to face Egypt. However, they are also prepared to make adjustments should he fail to regain full fitness.
As Zimbabwe fine-tunes its preparations, all eyes will remain on Khama Billiat. His availability could play a decisive role in the Warriors’ ambitions at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. Whether he makes a timely return or is forced to watch from the sidelines, his situation underscores the fragile balance between hope and uncertainty that often defines the final days before a major international tournament.
