Zimbabwe Faces Tough Challenge Against Hosts Egypt in AFCON 2019 Opener
Making their fourth Africa Cup of Nations appearance, Zimbabwe kicks off the 2019 tournament against host nation Egypt. The Warriors face a formidable task in the opening match, with history not on their side—they have never progressed beyond the group stage.
Coach Sunday Chidzambwa remains optimistic, pointing to his team’s experience and past surprises in the qualifiers:
“We know how formidable Egypt is, especially when they play at home. However, we have experienced players capable of handling this kind of situation. In the qualifying phase, we were not favorites and we managed to pull off a surprise, why not create another upset?”
Key player Khama Billiat is doubtful due to a knee injury, which could put the spotlight on Knowledge Musona, the Lokeren striker and third-highest scorer in the qualifiers with five goals. Zimbabwe will need courage and strategy to overcome Egypt in this challenging opener.
