The race for the final spots in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations is entering its decisive phase, and even some of Africa’s biggest footballing nations are under pressure. Among them is Cameroon, the defending champions, who find themselves in a situation few had anticipated. Originally set to qualify automatically as hosts, the tournament’s reassignment to Egypt has forced the Indomitable Lions to fight for their place in the finals until the very last matchday.
This Saturday, Cameroon faces a crucial showdown against the Comoros in Yaoundé. A draw will be sufficient for the Lions to secure qualification and defend their title at the tournament scheduled from June 21 to July 19. Despite the seeming advantage of playing at home, the Cameroonian squad is approaching the match with caution and determination, recognizing that nothing is guaranteed in football.
Paris Saint-Germain forward Eric Choupo-Moting underlined the stakes ahead of the match. “Cameroon is the favorite, and we’re playing at home, even though we know it won’t be easy. Our goal is clear: to win this match and, above all, to play well. I feel good, and I’m going to give everything for a good performance, whether by providing assists or, why not, by scoring. It’s my job; it’s important for me to give my best for the team. Our opponents want to score, and so do we. It’s true that it’s not easy, but as I said, we’re playing at home in our stadium, in front of our fans,” he told Camfoot.
Cameroon’s players and coaching staff are well aware of the challenge posed by the Comoros, who have impressed throughout the qualifiers and are aiming for their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations appearance. Defender Oyongo Bitolo stressed the need for focus and control: “We have to dominate and impose our game because it’s an important match. We mustn’t spoil the celebration in front of our fans. We have the opportunity to qualify, especially since it’s the last match. If we try to make the difference we couldn’t make in the first leg, I think we’ll get the result we’re looking for. It’s no coincidence that the Comoros team is at this stage—they also have the ability to qualify against us. They’re a good team, with a great attack, and they know each other well. So it will be a difficult task for us. Then it’s up to us to show that we’re capable of winning this match and being superior to them. We have to qualify to go and defend our title.”
While Cameroon currently holds a three-point lead, meaning a draw would suffice, the team faces additional uncertainty due to ongoing scrutiny from the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which could impose sanctions or even disqualification. This looming possibility has added extra pressure on the squad to perform flawlessly and avoid any lapses.
The stakes could hardly be higher: a successful qualification would allow Cameroon to defend their crown, while failure—whether on the pitch or due to administrative sanctions—would be a major upset for one of Africa’s footballing powerhouses. The Lions must balance caution with ambition, ensuring they control the game while asserting their dominance over an inspired Comoros side.
As kick-off approaches in Yaoundé, anticipation is high among fans and analysts alike. Cameroon has the talent, experience, and home advantage, but the challenge is clear: they must perform, avoid mistakes, and secure the result that will carry them into the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations as defending champions.
