Tanzania Return to AFCON After 39 Years With Convincing Win Over Uganda
Tanzania sealed qualification for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday by finishing second in Group L, following an impressive 3-0 victory over Uganda, who had already secured their place in the tournament.
The Taifa Stars delivered a composed and determined performance, knowing that a win was essential to keep their qualification hopes alive. They took the lead in the 21st minute when Saimon Msuva found the back of the net, giving Tanzania a deserved advantage before halftime.
In the second half, Tanzania continued to press and were rewarded once again. Erasto Nyoni doubled the lead from the penalty spot, calmly converting to put his side in control of the match. Just six minutes later, Aggrey Morris added a third goal, sealing a historic victory and confirming Tanzania’s long-awaited return to Africa’s biggest football stage.
This success marks a historic milestone for Tanzanian football, as the nation will participate in the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time since 1980. It will be only their second appearance in the competition, ending a 39-year absence from the continental tournament.
Despite the defeat, Uganda comfortably finished top of Group L with 13 points, having already secured qualification before the final matchday. Tanzania’s victory allowed them to claim second place with 8 points, while Lesotho (6 points) and Cape Verde (5 points) were eliminated.
Tanzania’s qualification is the result of resilience and belief, crowned by a dominant performance against a strong Ugandan side. The Taifa Stars can now look ahead with confidence as they prepare for their historic participation at AFCON 2019 in Egypt.
