Liberia is facing uncertainty ahead of its decisive Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2019) qualifier against the Democratic Republic of Congo, as concerns over the Ebola outbreak continue to cast doubt on the venue. The Liberian Football Association has formally expressed its reluctance to have the match played in Kinshasa, citing health and safety fears, and is still awaiting a final decision from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) regarding a possible change of venue.

Despite this unresolved situation, Liberia’s head coach has proceeded with preparations and has officially unveiled a 20-man squad for the crucial sixth and final matchday of the qualifiers against the Leopards. The match is of major importance, as Liberia currently sits second in Group G and remains firmly in contention for qualification to the continental showpiece.

At the heart of the Lone Stars’ ambitions is star striker William Jebor, who plies his trade with Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca. Jebor, Liberia’s most recognizable international name, is expected to play a decisive role in a match that could define the country’s recent footballing history. His experience at the highest level of African club football will be vital against a strong Congolese side playing on home soil.

Liberia knows that a positive result against DR Congo would secure qualification for the 2019 AFCON, making the stakes exceptionally high. While the Congolese will rely on home support and their physical presence, the Lone Stars are determined to rise to the occasion, regardless of the venue ultimately chosen by CAF.

The squad selected reflects a mix of domestic-based players and internationals playing abroad, highlighting the coach’s desire to blend local familiarity with overseas experience. In goal, Tommy Songo and Ashley Williams of LISCR FC are joined by Alpha Jalloh from Barrack Young Controllers, providing solid options between the posts.

Defensively, the team will count on players such as Alvin Marccornel and Aloysius Simujla from LPRC Oilers, alongside Teah Dennis and Eugene Swen of Barrack Young Controllers. Additional defensive depth is provided by Gasimu Sheikh Kouyateh, Kemoh Kamara, and US-based Joel Johnson Alajarin of Charlotte Independence.

The midfield appears particularly well-stocked, with experienced campaigners and creative talents. Oscar Murphy Dorley (Slovan Liberec) and Allen Njie (Grasshopper Zurich) bring European exposure, while Sylvanus Nimely of Spartak Moscow offers attacking flair. England-based Mohammed Sangare of Newcastle United adds energy, complemented by Sam Johnson (Real Salt Lake) and Marvin Blapoh from Monrovia Club Breweries.

Up front, Liberia will rely on the attacking trio of William Jebor, Kpah Sean Sherman, and brothers Tonia and Terrance Tisdell, whose combined pace and movement could trouble the Congolese defense.

As Liberia awaits CAF’s final ruling on the match venue, focus remains firmly on the sporting challenge ahead. Qualification for the AFCON would mark a major achievement for Liberian football, and the Lone Stars are determined to seize this historic opportunity—wherever the decisive clash ultimately takes place.
