The sixth round of qualifying for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations continues this Saturday, with one of the most high-stakes matches taking place in Yaoundé, where Comoros faces Cameroon. For the Coelacanths, a victory is essential: a win would see them qualify for their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations finals, making history for the small island nation. Any other result would eliminate them, unless the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rules in their favor and excludes the Indomitable Lions from the competition.
Comoros will be without their suspended striker, El Fardou Ben Nabouhane, but the team remains optimistic. Speaking to France Football, midfielder Fouad Bachirou highlighted the significance of the match: “There’s a lot of excitement. Everyone is eager for the match to start, given what’s at stake and the atmosphere. It’s certainly the most important match in our short history. We have a fantastic opportunity to play for something huge for our nation and our team: a place in the next Africa Cup of Nations. That would be historic.”
Bachirou, who plays for Malmö FF in Sweden, emphasized the strength of the Coelacanths beyond individual talent. “We have a strong brotherhood, and that’s not just an empty phrase. Key players arrived around 2010-11, like Nadjim Abdou, Youssouf Mchangama, and Kassim Abdallah, and I joined in 2013-14. We laid the foundations despite limited resources. Today, talented young players have joined us to make history. We get along well, and we want to bring joy to the entire nation, to repay their love. It’s up to us to achieve something extraordinary.”
Despite the historic stakes, Bachirou insists that the team is not overburdened by pressure. “We have faith. We believe in our abilities. Our past performances in big matches have proven that we can compete with major nations. That gives us strength. We’re going to enjoy the moment, hoping that the result will be there in the end. As our former federation president, Mr. Tourqui, used to say, ‘We’re moving forward.’ That phrase still guides us.”
Comoros’ journey to this stage has been remarkable, given their small size and limited football infrastructure. The squad combines experienced players who have been part of the team for years with talented youngsters eager to make their mark. This blend of experience and youth, combined with unity and a clear sense of purpose, gives the Coelacanths a genuine chance to defy expectations against one of Africa’s powerhouse teams.
Saturday’s encounter promises to be tense and historic. For Cameroon, the match is about maintaining dominance and securing qualification, while for Comoros, it is about seizing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. A victory would see the islanders step onto the continental stage for the first time, creating a moment that will be celebrated for generations and inspiring a nation with dreams of football glory.
The Coelacanths are ready. With determination, teamwork, and belief, they aim to achieve something extraordinary in Yaoundé and write a new chapter in Comoros football history.
