Morocco suffered a 1-0 defeat to Gambia yesterday in Marrakech in a friendly match ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, with the Atlas Lions struggling to convert several clear chances. Despite the loss, coach Hervé Renard offered explanations for the team’s attacking difficulties, emphasizing the context of preparation and workload. Speaking to Arryadia, Renard highlighted that the squad had completed 13 intensive training sessions, which contributed to a slower pace on the pitch and affected decision-making during the match.

Renard acknowledged that the team’s performance was far from optimal but cautioned against overreacting. “It was a tough performance. We had 13 training sessions, so there was a pretty heavy workload… We played at a very leisurely pace. I feel like we couldn’t have done any better. But there’s nothing alarming, the competition starts for us on June 23rd and we must never lose sight of that date. When we’re less fresh, we don’t make the right decisions, we make mistakes,” he explained. His comments aimed to reassure supporters that the team’s preparation remains on track despite the defeat.

The Moroccan coach also made remarks that drew attention, reflecting his perspective on the role of warm-up matches in overall tournament readiness. “We’ve never won a warm-up match, yet we’ve had some great competitions. The important thing is to do better than we did today, but sometimes it feels good and puts things back on track,” Renard noted. His remarks underline a philosophy that prioritizes learning and adjustments over results in preparatory games, focusing on long-term performance rather than short-term outcomes.

Morocco’s attacking struggles were evident throughout the match, as several high-quality chances went unconverted, frustrating both the players and the fans in attendance. However, Renard’s assessment suggests that the technical staff sees value in using these friendlies to test tactics, assess player fitness, and identify areas for improvement ahead of the tournament. The coach emphasized that the team’s preparation continues and that the competitive phase will begin in earnest on June 23rd, when Morocco faces its first opponent in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Looking ahead, Morocco is scheduled to play its second and final test match this Sunday, June 16, against Zambia’s Chipolopolos. This match will provide another opportunity for Renard to refine his squad, implement tactical adjustments, and improve offensive efficiency before the tournament kicks off. The coach’s focus remains on ensuring the team is fully prepared and mentally sharp, acknowledging that errors and missed opportunities during friendlies are part of the preparation process.

While the defeat to Gambia highlighted challenges in finishing and game tempo, it also serves as a benchmark for improvement. Renard’s comments convey confidence that the team can recover and perform strongly in the Africa Cup of Nations, with the warm-up matches functioning as valuable learning experiences rather than indicators of failure. With the second friendly against Zambia approaching, Morocco aims to address the attacking lapses and enter the tournament with renewed focus and readiness.
