Namibia delivered an impressive performance by defeating Ghana in a preparatory match ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, with Manfred Starke scoring the decisive goal. This victory has injected confidence into a team aiming to make an impact despite being considered underdogs in the tournament.
The 2019 AFCON marks Namibia’s third appearance at the competition, following their previous participations in 1998 and 2008, where they were eliminated in the first round. While the team lacks high-profile stars, the players and coaching staff remain determined to exceed expectations and make their mark in Group D.
Coach Ricardo Mannetti, 44, expressed optimism after the Ghana match, highlighting the positive impact of their preparations. “The match against Ghana gave us a lot of confidence for the match against Morocco, and we are convinced that we can surprise Africa. We can’t wait for the game to start so we can continue to live this dream. Our first objective is to win our first match at the AFCON,” he told the Economist website.
Mannetti emphasized the importance of their pre-tournament training camp in Dubai, which offered conditions similar to those in Cairo, where Group D matches will be held. The warm climate and focused training helped the team prepare both physically and mentally for the challenges ahead. “The camp in Dubai was perfect for us with the warm conditions and also helped us mentally to balance our preparations for our first match. We are the least expected team to win, which motivates us to do more, and we are ready to do it,” he added.
Namibia will travel to Cairo on Tuesday, arriving three days before the tournament’s opening match. Their opening fixture will be against Morocco, and the squad is determined to start strong and set the tone for the competition. The team’s strategy hinges on discipline, teamwork, and seizing opportunities despite the lack of marquee names.
Historically, Namibia has struggled to advance beyond the group stage, but this year the squad is intent on rewriting its AFCON story. Coach Mannetti’s emphasis on mental readiness and confidence-building through preparatory matches reflects a strategic approach to overcoming the odds. The win over Ghana demonstrates the team’s capability to challenge more established sides and provides a morale boost ahead of their first tournament game.
While Group D features strong opponents, Namibia’s focus on collective effort and tactical discipline could make them a challenging side for any team. The combination of rigorous preparation, a motivated squad, and strategic coaching aims to transform the team’s underdog status into a platform for potential upsets.
As Namibia embarks on its AFCON campaign, the eyes of the nation will be on the players to deliver a memorable performance. The team is poised to test its limits and prove that with determination and tactical focus, even a team without big-name stars can compete on Africa’s biggest football stage. With momentum from the Ghana victory and a carefully planned preparation period, Namibia is ready to make its presence felt in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
