Morocco under pressure as Fayçal Fajr becomes target of supporters
Just three days before the start of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, the Moroccan national team is struggling to reassure its supporters. Defeats against Gambia (1–0) and Zambia (3–2) in their final preparation matches have raised doubts about the Atlas Lions’ readiness, and tension is now growing around the squad.
Adding to the uneasy atmosphere, midfielder Fayçal Fajr has found himself at the center of controversy. The Moroccan international was booed by the crowd in Marrakech last Sunday. Supporters expressed their frustration following his missed penalty against Gambia and what some perceived as inappropriate behavior after striker Abderrazak Hamdallah left the pitch injured.
Despite the hostile reception, Morocco assistant coach Patrice Beaumelle moved quickly to defend his player, insisting the criticism was unfair and based on a misunderstanding.
“Fayçal is someone who always puts the team first. He is very positive within the group every day, and I was saddened by the boos because there was a misunderstanding,” Beaumelle explained. “Before the match, we told ourselves we would stay strong and ignore it. You should know he is an extraordinary person, loved by all the players and the staff. I don’t think he deserves this treatment.”
The assistant coach also called for perspective and patience from supporters.
“A few weeks ago, everyone loved him. I hope that will change quickly because he deserves it. He’s a good player and a good guy,” he added, attempting to calm tensions around the squad.
With the tournament about to begin, Morocco now faces not only a sporting challenge, but also a psychological one: restoring unity between the team and its fans.
The Atlas Lions will open their AFCON campaign on Sunday, June 23 at 2:30 PM GMT, against Namibia in Group D. A positive result could go a long way toward easing pressure and refocusing attention back on the pitch.
