Sekou Koïta included as Mali unveil preliminary squad for AFCON 2019

Already competing with Mali at the U20 World Cup in Poland, young forward Sékou Koïta has also been named in the preliminary squad of the senior national team ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. The announcement confirms the rapid rise of the talented attacker, who continues to earn the trust of national team coach Mohamed Magassouba.

Magassouba has opted for continuity by retaining the core group of players that successfully guided Mali through qualification. With the exception of Salif Coulibaly, who recently signed for Raja Casablanca, all the key figures remain part of the squad. The coach’s strategy reflects a desire to build on existing chemistry while gradually integrating young talents such as Koïta into the senior setup.

Mali will travel to Egypt with clear ambitions. Drawn in a competitive group alongside Tunisia, Mauritania, and Angola, the Eagles know that consistency and squad depth will be essential if they are to reach the knockout stages and go further in the tournament.

The goalkeeping department is led by Djigui Diarra of Stade Malien, supported by France-based Mamadou Samassa (Troyes) and local league goalkeeper Adama Keïta (Djoliba). This trio offers a balance between domestic experience and exposure to European football.

Defensively, Magassouba has assembled a solid and versatile unit. The squad includes experienced fullbacks such as Molla Wagué (Nottingham Forest) and Hamari Traoré (Rennes), along with Falaye Sacko (Vitória Guimarães) and Massadio Haïdara (Lens). Central defensive options like Mamadou Fofana (FC Metz) and Boubacar Kiki Kouyaté (Troyes) provide physical presence and tactical discipline, giving Mali several reliable combinations at the back.

In midfield, Mali can rely on one of the most dynamic groups in African football. Diadié Samassékou (RB Salzburg) and Amadou Haïdara (RB Leipzig) bring high-level European experience, while Yves Bissouma (Brighton) adds power and ball progression. The presence of Cheick Doucouré, Lassana Coulibaly, and Adama Traoré ensures depth, work rate, and creativity, giving the Eagles flexibility in both defensive and attacking phases.

The attacking line is particularly rich in options. Moussa Maréga (FC Porto) and Kalifa Coulibaly (Nantes) offer physical strength and finishing ability, while Moussa Djénépo (Standard Liège) and Moussa Doumbia (Reims) bring speed and unpredictability on the wings. Forwards such as Abdoulaye Diaby, Hadi Sacko, Adama Niane, and Adama Traoré further enhance Mali’s offensive depth.

The inclusion of Sékou Koïta is one of the highlights of this preliminary list. Despite his young age, the striker has impressed at youth level and in club football, convincing the technical staff that he is ready to compete for a place among the senior Eagles. His energy and eye for goal could provide Mali with an additional weapon as the tournament progresses.

With a balanced squad blending experience and youth, Mali head into the final phase of preparation determined to make a strong impression at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations and to confirm their status as one of the continent’s most promising teams.
