Mali Faces Possible Suspension Ahead of 2019 Africa Cup of Nations
Mali’s participation in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations could be in jeopardy following a stern warning from FIFA. The international governing body conveyed its concerns directly to Malian authorities, including Prime Minister Boubou Cissé and Minister of Youth and Sports Arouna Modibo Touré, during a visit by Véron Mossengo-Omba, FIFA’s Regional Director for Member Associations in Africa and the Caribbean, to Bamako on Saturday.
The warning comes amid growing concerns over the ongoing governance issues within the Malian Football Federation (FMF). FIFA emphasized that the upcoming General Assembly scheduled for June 15th must proceed without interference, in order to stabilize the Federation and ensure Mali’s football operations comply with international standards. Any disruption orchestrated by individuals opposed to the proper conduct of the Assembly could trigger serious consequences.
“The message from FIFA and CAF is clear,” Mossengo-Omba stated during discussions with Malian authorities. “If the General Assembly scheduled for next Saturday is sabotaged by certain individuals, FIFA will take responsibility. There will be sanctions against Malian football, including suspension from FIFA competitions and potentially exclusion from the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled in Egypt from June 21 to July 19.”
The warning underlines the severity of the situation and the potential impact on Mali’s national team, the Eagles, which was preparing for AFCON participation. FIFA and CAF’s message stresses the need for unity and transparency within the Federation to avoid a crisis that could not only affect players and staff but also damage Mali’s reputation on the continental stage.
FIFA has been closely monitoring developments within Malian football for months. The visit by Mossengo-Omba aimed to assess the current situation firsthand, engage with governmental authorities, and reinforce the governing body’s commitment to upholding the integrity of football in Mali. The emphasis was clear: the upcoming General Assembly represents a crucial opportunity for Mali to resolve its internal issues and meet the compliance standards required by both FIFA and CAF.
Local football officials have been officially cautioned that failure to conduct the Assembly in a legitimate and transparent manner could result in suspension from all FIFA-sanctioned events, including the prestigious Africa Cup of Nations. Such a suspension would not only impact the senior national team but could also affect youth competitions and broader development programs, potentially stalling the growth of football in Mali for years.
As the June 15th General Assembly approaches, all eyes are on the Malian Football Federation and its leadership. The coming days are critical for ensuring that the Federation operates in accordance with international statutes and that Mali’s Eagles can compete on the African stage without the shadow of administrative controversy. FIFA’s warning serves as a reminder that the governance of football is as important as on-field performance, and that proper organizational conduct is essential to safeguard the future of Malian football.
