Algeria has been drawn into Group C for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, joining Senegal, Kenya, and Tanzania. The Fennecs, Africa’s 2019 champions-in-waiting, enter the tournament with high expectations, but coach Djamel Belmadi is approaching the group stage with caution, fully aware of the challenges that lie ahead.

According to Belmadi, Senegal is the standout team in Group C and the clear favorite. “If you analyze the teams, Senegal needs no introduction. They are among the last World Cup participants, have been working together for some time, and have displayed a high level of performance. We have to be clear about that. And they are undoubtedly favorites for this Africa Cup of Nations. And by necessity, they are the favorites in the group,” he told Goal. The West African side, with its blend of World Cup experience, strong individual talent, and tactical cohesion, represents the primary hurdle for Algeria in their pursuit of group-stage success.

Belmadi, however, is equally mindful of Algeria’s other opponents. Both Kenya and Tanzania, while less established on the continental stage, should not be underestimated. “These are two teams that haven’t played in the Africa Cup of Nations for a while, especially Tanzania,” Belmadi noted. He highlighted that their participation is largely a result of the tournament’s expansion to 24 teams, but he also stressed that their presence is justified. “If they’re here, it’s because they deserve it,” he added, signaling that Algeria will approach every match with seriousness, regardless of the perceived ranking of the opposition.

Preparation and analysis will be key components of Algeria’s strategy. Belmadi emphasized that his team will study all opponents thoroughly, reviewing match footage and evaluating tactical tendencies to ensure that they enter each game well-prepared. The first match against Kenya, in particular, is a priority, as a strong start can set the tone for the rest of the group stage. “All our opponents will be studied thoroughly. We’ll watch all their matches. And we’ll also work hard and prepare well for this first match against Kenya. Now it’s time to get to work!” he said.

Algeria’s approach under Belmadi reflects a balance between confidence and prudence. While the Fennecs are widely regarded as one of the tournament’s elite sides, the coach is aware that complacency can be costly in the Africa Cup of Nations. Each opponent, whether a traditional powerhouse like Senegal or a less-experienced side like Tanzania, presents unique challenges, and success will require discipline, focus, and adaptability.

The group-stage draw positions Algeria in a competitive and intriguing bracket. Senegal represents the primary threat, but Kenya and Tanzania bring unpredictability and the motivation to make a mark on the continental stage. For Algeria, the challenge is to navigate this mix successfully, starting with a strong performance against Kenya, while maintaining consistency and sharpness against all three opponents.

As the Fennecs prepare for the 2019 AFCON, Belmadi’s emphasis on analysis, preparation, and respect for every opponent demonstrates a clear strategic mindset. Algeria enters the tournament as a contender, but one that knows the importance of diligence, focus, and tactical intelligence if it is to progress past the group stage and vie for the continental crown.
