Having secured qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the 19th time, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) enters the 2019 tournament in Egypt with ambitious goals. With a history of strong performances, including a third-place finish in 2015 and a quarter-final appearance in 2017, the DRC is aiming to reclaim glory by winning the AFCON title, a feat they last achieved in 1974. The team, which also triumphed in 1968, carries a legacy that inspires both players and fans to target the ultimate prize this year.

The road to qualification was far from easy. Competing in Group G alongside Zimbabwe, Liberia, and Congo Brazzaville, the DRC faced several challenges before securing their spot. It was only on the final matchday that they confirmed qualification with a narrow 1-0 victory over Liberia at the Stade des Martyrs in Kinshasa. This win allowed them to finish with 9 points, just behind Zimbabwe, who topped the group with 11 points. Despite the challenges, the DRC demonstrated resilience and determination, characteristics that they hope to carry into the main tournament.

The squad heading to Egypt is filled with talent across all positions. Key players include Marcel Tisserand, a solid defender playing for Wolfsburg in Germany, and Chancel Mbemba, a versatile midfielder with FC Porto. On the attack, the DRC relies on the creativity and scoring ability of Yannick Bolasie of Anderlecht and Cédric Bakambu, who has made a mark in China with Beijing Goan. These standout performers are supported by a wider pool of skilled players, creating a balanced and competitive team capable of challenging for the title.

Coach Florent Ibenge faces significant pressure as he leads the team into the tournament. With expectations high from both the Congolese Football Federation and the nation’s passionate supporters, Ibenge has been given a clear mandate: guide the team to the trophy or face the consequences. The coaching staff and players alike understand the stakes, making mental preparation and strategic execution critical components of the DRC’s campaign.

Success in the tournament will first require the DRC to navigate the challenges of Group A, which features the host nation Egypt, as well as Uganda and Zimbabwe. Each match presents its own difficulties, with Egypt being a particularly formidable opponent on home soil. The DRC’s schedule in the group stage is set, beginning with a clash against Uganda on Saturday, June 22, followed by a showdown with Egypt on Wednesday, June 26, and concluding with a match against Zimbabwe on Sunday, June 30. Every game will be decisive, as points gained in the group stage will determine whether the DRC can progress to the knockout rounds and continue their quest for continental glory.

With a talented squad, a determined coach, and a history of success to inspire them, the Democratic Republic of Congo enters AFCON 2019 with clear objectives and high expectations. Overcoming the challenges of the group stage and performing consistently will be crucial if they are to lift the trophy and add a third AFCON title to their proud legacy. The team and their supporters are ready to embrace the challenge, with dreams of victory fueling their pursuit of continental triumph.
