Virtually eliminated from the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations after Wednesday’s defeat to Egypt, the Democratic Republic of Congo is making headlines off the pitch as much as on it. Following their earlier loss to Uganda, the Leopards’ misfortunes continued, this time with a controversy over their team attire.
Constant Omari, head of the Congolese Football Federation, publicly criticized the company responsible for producing the players’ suits. According to Omari, the suits were poorly made and did not reflect the prestige of the national team.
“That little jerk who delivered the suits… don’t wear his suits anymore, do you hear?” Omari exclaimed. “Pack them up and return them. A thug!” His anger was palpable, highlighting his frustration with the off-field issues surrounding the team.
On the field, DR Congo’s campaign has been equally disappointing. With 0 points after two matches and a goal difference of -4, the Leopards face an uphill battle and have very little chance of advancing to the round of 16 of the 2019 AFCON.
