Senegalese Federation Clarifies Sadio Mané’s Eligibility for AFCON 2019 Opener
Senegal, widely regarded as one of the favorites for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), was reportedly set to begin its campaign on June 23 against Tanzania without superstar Sadio Mané. Initial reports from the Senegalese newspaper Record claimed that the Liverpool forward would miss the opening match due to accumulated yellow cards, one each received against Madagascar and Equatorial Guinea during the qualifiers.
The news sparked concern among Senegalese fans, given Mané’s pivotal role in the team’s attack. However, the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) quickly issued a clarification. According to the FSF, the second yellow card allegedly attributed to Mané during the match against Equatorial Guinea was never officially recorded by the referee in his match report. This means that the player remains eligible to feature in Senegal’s first AFCON match against Tanzania.
The FSF has called on the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to formally confirm Mané’s status ahead of the tournament kickoff, ensuring there is no ambiguity regarding the striker’s eligibility. The clarification is crucial, as Senegal’s attacking strategy heavily relies on Mané, who has been in scintillating form for Liverpool during the 2018-2019 season.
With the Lions of Teranga aiming to lift their first AFCON trophy in decades, having their talisman available from the start is vital. Senegal shares Group C with Tanzania, Algeria, and Kenya, and the team is expected to field its strongest lineup in pursuit of continental glory.
The resolution of this eligibility issue will not only reassure Senegalese fans but also reaffirm the team’s readiness to challenge for the title in Egypt. CAF’s official confirmation is now eagerly awaited before the tournament’s opening matches.
