Tunisia is raising concerns over the scheduling of certain matches at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations due to the intense heat expected in Egypt next month. The president of the Tunisian Football Federation (FTF), Wadii Al Jari, has formally approached CAF president Ahmed Ahmed to request a review of the match timings.
According to a statement from the FTF, the request is based on medical advice highlighting the health risks players face when competing in extreme temperatures of 40–45°C. The Federation noted that similar climatic concerns led FIFA to move the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to November–December. The FTF specifically requested that matches scheduled for 4:30 PM local time be rescheduled to protect players’ hearts and overall performance.
CAF president Ahmed Ahmed has acknowledged the request and is consulting the CAF medical committee before making a decision. Seven first-round matches of the AFCON are currently slated for 4:30 PM, meaning the adjustment could affect a significant portion of the opening fixtures.
Even before the tournament begins, the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations is already seeing unexpected developments, with Tunisia’s intervention highlighting the growing importance of player welfare in major competitions.
