The Comoros Islands will have to wait a little longer to learn the outcome of their appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), an appeal that could significantly reshape the final standings of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. Filed several months ago, the appeal seeks the exclusion of Cameroon from the competition following CAF’s decision to strip the Indomitable Lions of the right to host the 2019 AFCON.
According to information reported by Jeune Afrique, CAS has chosen not to deliver its verdict immediately. Instead, the Lausanne-based court has decided to issue its ruling only after the sixth and final matchday of the AFCON qualifiers. Ironically, that decisive round will feature a direct clash between Cameroon and the Comoros Islands, scheduled for March 22 in Yaoundé. As a result, the match will go ahead as planned and will retain its full sporting significance.
From a purely footballing perspective, the stakes could not be higher. Cameroon, playing at home, needs only a draw to validate its qualification for the tournament. The Comoros, on the other hand, face a far more demanding task: they must secure an outright victory on Cameroonian soil if they want to book a historic place at the AFCON finals. Such a scenario already represents a daunting challenge, given Cameroon’s pedigree and experience on the continental stage.
However, the pending CAS appeal adds an extra layer of tension and uncertainty to this decisive encounter. Should CAS ultimately rule in favor of the Comoros and exclude Cameroon from the competition, the Coelacanths’ qualification scenario would change dramatically. Speaking candidly, he suggested that the continental governing body may be shielding Cameroon from sporting consequences.
“We have the feeling that CAF is trying to protect Cameroon,” the Comoros coach stated. “There are regulations, and there is reason to be angry when we hear such things.”
Despite the controversy, the Comoros are determined to focus on the sporting challenge ahead. The team has already defied expectations during the qualifying campaign and remains convinced that it can produce another surprise, even in the intimidating environment of Yaoundé.
