Zimbabwe Resolves Financial Dispute Ahead of AFCON 2019 Opener Against Egypt
Zimbabwe’s Warriors will take to the pitch against hosts Egypt in the opening match of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations on Friday, after resolving a last-minute financial dispute.
Earlier this week, the players threatened to boycott the match over unpaid qualification bonuses and allowances. They refused to train on Thursday in protest, raising concerns about the kickoff of the tournament.
A meeting with the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) led to an agreement, with both parties signing a contract to ensure the players’ participation. ZIFA emphasized that the team remains focused on their game:
“ZIFA would like to remind everyone that the Warriors remain focused on their game. ZIFA and the Warriors have signed a contract that both parties will honor,” the governing body stated.
With the dispute settled, the opening match at Cairo International Stadium is set to kick off at 8 PM GMT, marking Zimbabwe’s fourth appearance in the Africa Cup of Nations.
