Benin Returns to AFCON After Nine Years, Eyes Strong Showing in Group F
After a nine-year absence from the Africa Cup of Nations, Benin has secured its place in the 2019 edition in Egypt, following a decisive 1-0 victory over Togo in the qualifiers. This will mark the Squirrels’ fourth appearance at the tournament, after 2004, 2008, and 2010.
For the 2019 AFCON, Benin has been drawn into Group F, alongside defending champions Cameroon, as well as strong sides Ghana and Guinea-Bissau. While the group presents a challenging road, coach Michel Dussuyer and his squad are determined to prove their worth on the continental stage.
“Benin is no longer a small team in Africa or in the world; we are among the top 20 African sides. We will compete seriously against every team in Group F,” said Chamss Deen Chaona, defender and midfielder for SC Nejmeh in Lebanon’s top flight. “No team should be underestimated. We have the tools to advance past the first round; we just need focus and discipline.”
Cédric Hountondji, who recently joined Levski Sofia from Rennes, echoed his teammate’s sentiments: “We’ll fight and give our all in every match, regardless of the opponent. Many underestimate our potential, but the Beninese public is counting on us. We will show that we are strong.”
Local midfielder Patrick Sédjamè, of Buffles du Borgou FC, added, “Nothing scares the Squirrels of Benin anymore. We’ve learned from past mistakes and experiences. By respecting the coach’s instructions and staying determined, we can be a force to be reckoned with and a thorn in the side of all our opponents.”
With a mix of domestic talent and players gaining experience abroad, Benin enters the tournament with renewed confidence and a hunger to leave a mark. While the group stage will be tough, the Squirrels’ ambition is clear: compete fiercely, respect every opponent, and show that they are no longer just participants but genuine contenders in African football.
