Group F of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations will feature one of West Africa’s most anticipated derbies this Tuesday, as Benin takes on Ghana with the goal of claiming their first victory in the tournament. The Squirrels return to AFCON after a nine-year absence, having secured qualification on the final day of the qualifiers. Under the guidance of French coach Michel Dussuyer, Benin has built a disciplined squad that relies on a solid defensive structure and quick counter-attacks to unsettle opponents. Key players such as Jordan Adeoti, Khaled Adenon, Stéphane Sessegnon, David Djigla, and Steve Mounié provide experience and creativity, giving the team the tools to challenge even the strongest sides.

Speaking ahead of the match, Dussuyer acknowledged Ghana’s strength while emphasizing his team’s determination. “Ghana is a team full of experience and talent that can win the title. But even if we don’t have their quality, we want the victory. Of course, the absence of some players affects us, but we know that our first match is against Ghana and we are determined to put on a good performance. We have prepared for this so that their absence doesn’t affect us,” he said, highlighting the team’s focus and preparation.

Ghana, meanwhile, comes into the tournament with high expectations, having been finalists in 2015 and finishing fourth in 2017. The Black Stars are determined to claim the title that has eluded them since 1982. Captain André Ayew expressed the squad’s ambition ahead of the clash, saying, “The trophy is the objective, we will give everything on the field, it is the price to pay and we are ready for the fight.” Ghana’s blend of experience and talent makes them a formidable opponent in the opening fixture.

The West African derby will take place at Ismailia Stadium, kicking off at 8 PM GMT, with Tunisian referee Youssef Essrayri in charge. Benin will have to manage without captain Stéphane Sessegnon, who is serving the final match of his suspension, adding an extra challenge for the Squirrels in their return to AFCON.

Fans can expect a tightly contested, high-stakes encounter where strategy, discipline, and individual brilliance will be crucial. While Ghana enters as favorites due to their pedigree and experience, Benin’s determination, counter-attacking prowess, and disciplined defense could make for a competitive and thrilling match. The outcome of this opening Group F clash will set the tone for both teams as they begin their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations campaigns.
