CAF Announces 56 Referees for 2019 Africa Cup of Nations Preparations
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has revealed the list of 56 referees and assistant referees who will begin preparations for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in the coming days.
The training course will include 27 referees and 29 assistant referees, and is scheduled to take place from April 28 to May 5 in Rabat, Morocco. This preparation is part of CAF’s efforts to ensure that the officiating at Africa’s premier national team tournament meets the highest standards.
For the first time in AFCON history, Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology will be implemented starting from the quarter-finals. The officials responsible for overseeing the VAR system recently completed a specialized training course in Johannesburg, South Africa, equipping them with the skills needed to manage the technology effectively during matches.
Egypt will host the tournament from June 21 to July 19, 2019, marking the first edition to feature 24 teams. The draw for the competition took place last Friday, setting the stage for what promises to be a highly competitive and historic AFCON.
