Egypt’s Preparations for AFCON 2019 on Track, Says LOC President Hosni Abo Rida
With exactly 100 days remaining until the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations kicks off in Egypt on June 21, preparations for the continent’s premier football tournament are well underway. In an interview with the CAF website, Hosni Abo Rida, president of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), provided an extensive update on the progress and plans leading up to the historic edition.
“Preparations are proceeding as planned,” Abo Rida confirmed. “From the outset, there have been daily meetings between the LOC and the specialist committees to ensure deadlines are met.” He explained that the planning covers a broad range of areas, with a strong focus on creating ideal conditions for both players and fans. This includes stadium readiness, ensuring the pitches, changing rooms, stands, and fan zones meet the highest standards.
In addition, significant attention is being given to training facilities and accommodations. Hotels that will host the participating teams are being prepared to guarantee comfort and convenience, while transport networks are being arranged to facilitate smooth movement between stadiums and training grounds. Special consideration is also being given to foreign fans, with reception services and amenities tailored to enhance the visitor experience.
Abo Rida also discussed the upcoming lottery draw for the tournament, scheduled for April 12. “We have developed a concept that expresses Egypt’s past and future, based on a remarkable history and civilization,” he said. The ceremony will combine elements of Egyptian folklore and modern culture, reflecting the country’s rich heritage. Abo Rida highlighted that the draw will take place near the world-famous Giza pyramids, a site that symbolizes Egypt’s profound influence on human history. “Millions of people will watch the lottery draw ceremony, which presents an excellent opportunity to promote Egyptian tourism,” he added.
The LOC president emphasized that this edition of the Africa Cup of Nations is truly exceptional. For the first time, the tournament will feature 24 teams instead of 16, expanding opportunities for more nations to compete at the highest level. It is also the first time that the tournament will be held in summer, departing from its traditional January and February schedule. These changes, Abo Rida explained, make the 2019 AFCON a milestone in the competition’s history.
Reflecting on Egypt’s legacy in African football, he noted: “Egypt is synonymous with history and heritage. We were champions of the first two editions, in 1957 and 1959. Now we are making history again with this exceptional edition. We pray to God for success, which will make every African proud.”
As the countdown continues, the LOC remains focused on delivering a tournament that not only showcases top-level football but also highlights Egypt’s cultural richness and commitment to excellence. With comprehensive preparations and a historic setting, AFCON 2019 promises to be an unforgettable celebration of football and African pride.
