The New Zealand Football Federation expressed support for the proposal of the Asian Confederation (AFC) and Oceania to create a single qualifying zone, allowing five representatives from the 2018 World Cup. Frank van Hattum, the head of the New Zealand Football Federation, stated that they see merit in the winner of the Oceania zone joining the Asia zone qualifiers. He mentioned that having a gateway to the Asian play-offs would induce high-level matches and be more practical in terms of geography, travel, and logistics for both regions. Currently, Oceania only has one play-off place, which is contested against the Concacaf play-off player.
