African Games: Senegalese Women’s Basketball Team Overcomes Angola to Reach Quarter-Finals
Senegal’s women’s basketball team delivered a resilient performance to defeat Angola 63-52 on Sunday during the third day of the African Games, booking their place in the quarter-finals.
Despite trailing 25-28 at halftime, the Lionesses rallied in the second half, led by standout performances from Aya Traoré, who scored 19 points, and Mame-Marie Sy, who added 15 points. Their scoring prowess helped Senegal overturn the deficit with a strong third quarter, ending it 44-41, before pulling away decisively in the final period.
The victory was achieved despite a significant early setback. Star forward Astou Traoré was forced off the court just three minutes into the game due to injury. However, her teammates responded with composure and determination to see out the win against a physical Angolan side.
Head coach Moustapha Gaye’s squad now shifts focus to their next group-stage match against Côte d’Ivoire on Monday. The Ivorians come into the tie fresh off a close 67-63 win over Gabon on Saturday.
With two wins now under their belt, this triumph over Angola has already secured Senegal’s place in the quarter-finals, as the team aims to continue its strong campaign in pursuit of continental glory.
