Neymar Focused on Winning, Not Individual Glory, Ahead of World Cup
Brazil’s star forward Neymar has made it clear that his primary ambition at the 2014 World Cup is not personal accolades but lifting the trophy with his national team. Speaking at a press conference on the eve of Brazil’s opening match against Croatia, the FC Barcelona striker emphasized his desire to win the tournament above all else.
“I don’t want to be the best player in the World Cup, I want to win it,” Neymar declared confidently. The 22-year-old acknowledged the immense challenge ahead but called on Brazilian supporters to remain patient and fully behind the team throughout the competition.
“This is the World Cup. We are preparing to avoid mistakes, but there will be tough matches,” he said. “I ask the fans for patience and for their 100% support. If they are with us every game, Brazil will be very hard to beat.”
On the subject of potential standout players in the tournament, Neymar pointed to the ongoing rivalry between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. “There are many great players, and it’s hard to say who will be the star. I like Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo — one of them could be the star of this World Cup,” he added.
Despite Neymar’s modesty regarding individual recognition, his teammates see him as a key figure in Brazil’s quest for glory. Captain Thiago Silva praised Neymar’s motivation and talent, describing him as the player who could lead Brazil to victory.
“Our strength has always been the quality of our collective, but Neymar will certainly be the one to lead us to triumph,” Silva said. “He is very motivated and ready to have a great World Cup. He will be the star of the tournament.”
Silva also offered his perspective on the favourites for the title, highlighting Germany, Argentina, and Spain as the top contenders. He added that Italy and Uruguay could provide surprises, but ultimately, the team’s focus is on achieving the ultimate prize.
“We dream every day of winning this trophy,” the captain said.
As the tournament kicks off in Sao Paulo with the hosts facing Croatia, the pressure will be immense on Neymar and the Seleção to deliver on home soil. With a nation of 200 million behind them and expectations soaring, the young forward’s leadership and determination could prove pivotal in Brazil’s bid to secure their sixth World Cup title.
