Belgium Triumphs 5-1 Over Luxembourg in Warm-Up Ahead of World Cup
Belgium secured an emphatic 5-1 victory over Luxembourg in their final warm-up match before the World Cup, showcasing an impressive attacking performance. Romelu Lukaku was the star of the show, scoring a clinical hat-trick to lead the Red Devils to victory. Nacer Chadli and Kevin De Bruyne, who converted from the penalty spot, rounded off the scoring for Belgium.
The match also marked the debut of Divock Origi for the national team, with the young forward joining Lukaku in the attack. Despite the dominant result, Belgium captain Vincent Kompany urged caution, emphasizing that the focus remains on preparations rather than the final scoreline.
“If it helps our attackers’ confidence, so much the better,” Kompany said in an interview with RTBF. “Scoring five goals is always positive, especially since Luxembourg hadn’t conceded that many goals in their recent matches, particularly against Portugal and Russia. But I don’t like to draw conclusions from friendlies.”
Kompany stressed that the key takeaway was the opportunity to integrate new players into the squad, including Origi, Adnan Januzaj, and goalkeeper Jean-François Bossut. “We were able to welcome three new players, and that’s the most important thing,” he added. “We trained well during the week, and we’re preparing little by little, calmly, for the first match in Brazil. The coach may have a different opinion, but for me, the result comes second. The most important thing is that we prepare physically.”
Belgium now turns its focus to the World Cup, with Kompany noting that whether the team wins or loses their remaining friendlies will have no bearing on their performance in Brazil.
