Brazil is taking proactive steps to combat prostitution, particularly the exploitation of minors, during the upcoming World Cup. In collaboration with various organizations, including Ecpat France and its European network, as well as the European Union, the Social Service of Industry of Brazil, and the Brazilian government, a campaign called “Don’t look away” has been launched.
Two prominent soccer players, Kaka and Juninho, have lent their support to this campaign, urging fans to remain responsible and vigilant. They emphasize that engaging in the prostitution of minors is illegal and punishable by law, both in Brazil and abroad. They encourage people to report any instances of sexual exploitation by calling the designated hotline number, 100.
Brazil already faces challenges with child prostitution, with an estimated 250,000 children affected, particularly in the north-east region of the country. The campaign aims to raise awareness about the severity of the issue and the legal consequences associated with it, both domestically and internationally.
In France and other countries, engaging in the prostitution of minors can result in severe penalties, including imprisonment. The campaign stresses that football supporters, like any other individuals, are not inherently predisposed to such behavior. However, in the context of a major sporting event like the World Cup, there is a risk of individuals becoming “casual sex tourists” due to the festive and exotic atmosphere.
The campaign seeks to educate and empower individuals to resist such temptations and to report any instances of sexual exploitation they may encounter. With millions of spectators expected to attend the World Cup, it is crucial to raise awareness and take proactive measures to protect vulnerable individuals, especially minors, from exploitation.
