Jérôme Valcke, the Secretary General of FIFA, has been in Brazil since Saturday for a crucial visit aimed at inspecting three stadiums constructed for the upcoming World Cup in June.
During his visit, Valcke will assess the progress of stadiums in Manaus, Brasilia, and Porto Alegre, all designated venues for World Cup matches. Accompanied by Brazil’s Minister of Sports, Aldo Rebelo, he will specifically focus on the Arena da Amazonia in Manaus and the Beira Rio in Porto Alegre, both of which are still undergoing construction. The stadium in Brasilia, having been utilized during the Confederations Cup, is already operational.
This evaluation is pivotal as it will determine whether these stadiums are on track to meet FIFA’s standards and deadlines. However, a recent incident at the Beira Rio stadium over the weekend has added to the challenges faced by FIFA and Brazil.
The outcome of Valcke’s assessment at the end of the week will determine whether any further concerns or issues need to be addressed, potentially reigniting tensions between FIFA and Brazil.
