Djakpa Constant’s Wife Reflects on His Return to Ivory Coast Squad for 2014 World Cup
Absent from the Ivory Coast national team since the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations, Djakpa Constant’s unexpected recall to the squad for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil has surprised many fans and experts alike. His recent performances, including a convincing friendly against Belgium, earned him a place in the Elephants’ squad. Speaking exclusively to Africa Top Sports from Aguas Lindoia, Brazil, Madame Djakpa opens up about her husband’s journey back to international football and his preparations for his first World Cup.
When asked if she was surprised by her husband’s return to form after a challenging period, she was clear: “No, I wasn’t surprised. Constant is a hard worker. Despite physical setbacks and time on the sidelines, especially at Hannover, he never gave up. He stayed focused, worked hard, and gradually regained the trust of his coaches.”
She described the difficult times as a test of patience and resilience. “When he was injured, I supported him spiritually through prayer. I gave him space because he needed calm and time to recover.”

Djakpa’s international recall was uncertain for a long time. “After years away from the national team, his selection for the friendly against Belgium was already a big step. But it didn’t guarantee a place in the World Cup squad since he missed the qualifiers. We were hopeful but cautious.”
Despite the odds, the call-up finally came. Madame Djakpa recalled the moment: “He was in Abidjan when the pre-selection was announced. I kept him informed and he called me from the airport, overjoyed and eager to celebrate with friends. His first reaction to the final selection in Dallas was to give thanks to God. I could tell from our phone call that he was truly happy.”
She also shared a promise Constant made regarding Ivory Coast’s campaign. “He told me firmly — no joking — that he would help take Ivory Coast past the group stage.”
Competition within the squad, particularly with veteran left-back Arthur Boka, does not concern Constant. “He respects Arthur deeply but is not afraid of competition. He works hard every day to win the coach’s confidence.”
Madame Djakpa also spoke about how she experiences her husband’s matches. “When he plays at home, I try to attend the stadium. For away matches, I stay home to care for our children but watch calmly on TV. I’m not overly emotional but supportive.”
Regarding losses, she added, “You have to accept that there are winners and losers in football. I may feel a little down after defeats, but I encourage him to learn and improve.”
Looking ahead, she expressed strong faith in the team’s potential. “Unlike many Ivorians, I truly believe in the Elephants. I think Constant’s presence will be an important factor in their success.”
As the World Cup unfolds, the football world will watch to see if Djakpa Constant can indeed help write a new chapter in Ivory Coast’s football history.
