The situation around Cape Verde’s disqualification from the 2014 World Cup qualifiers has taken a new turn. Initially ruled in favor of Tunisia by FIFA due to the use of a suspended player, Cape Verde is reported to be considering an appeal.
Two days ago, FIFA had announced its decision, stating that Cape Verde used Fernando Varela, who was suspended for four matches, in their match against Tunisia. Consequently, Cape Verde was disqualified, and Tunisia advanced to the play-offs. However, according to the BBC, Cape Verde might appeal FIFA’s decision.
Despite the potential appeal, the chances of success seem slim given FIFA’s regulations. The rules state that expulsion, even during a match that is interrupted, canceled, and/or declared lost by forfeit, results in an automatic suspension for the next match. Fernando Varela’s suspension would likely stand.
As a result, Tunisia is unlikely to face significant risks due to the suspension, and the draw for the play-offs is scheduled for September 16.
