Scolari Names Brazil’s 23-Man Squad for 2014 World Cup – Ronaldinho and Kaká Left Out
Brazilian football fans received one of the most anticipated announcements in the build-up to the 2014 FIFA World Cup on Wednesday, as head coach Luiz Felipe Scolari revealed the 23 players who will represent the Seleção on home soil this summer.
Speaking at a press conference in Rio de Janeiro, Scolari confirmed a squad that blends youth and experience, with a strong presence of Europe-based stars, particularly from English Premier League side Chelsea, who contribute four players to the roster. The official announcement was met with nationwide interest and debate, particularly over the absence of two of Brazil’s most iconic footballers of the past decade — Ronaldinho and Kaká.
While Ronaldinho’s omission had been widely expected following a lacklustre season, there had been lingering uncertainty around Kaká. The 2007 Ballon d’Or winner, who had been hoping to feature in his fourth World Cup, was ultimately not selected. Scolari made no apologies for the decision, stating that form, fitness, and tactical balance were the guiding principles behind his selections.
“This group represents the best we have for the challenges ahead,” Scolari said. “We respect the history of all our great players, but our focus is on building a team that is strong and united.”
The defensive line is anchored by PSG centre-back and team captain Thiago Silva, who is joined by club teammate Maxwell, as well as David Luiz of Chelsea and Bayern Munich’s Dante. The full-back positions are filled by seasoned campaigners including Barcelona’s Dani Alves, Roma’s Maicon, and Real Madrid’s Marcelo.
In midfield, Scolari has opted for energy and versatility. The list includes Luiz Gustavo (Wolfsburg), Fernandinho (Manchester City), Paulinho (Tottenham), and Chelsea trio Ramires, Willian, and Oscar. Inter Milan’s Hernanes also secures a place, offering creativity and composure.
Up front, Brazil’s attacking hopes will be led by Barcelona star Neymar, who is expected to carry much of the team’s creative and goal-scoring responsibilities. He is joined by Zenit’s Hulk, Fred of Fluminense, and Bernard, the dynamic winger from Shakhtar Donetsk. Atlético Mineiro’s Jô, who had impressed in previous call-ups, also features.
Despite the controversy surrounding some of the omissions, the squad presents a clear picture of Scolari’s tactical vision: a team rooted in European club experience, balanced by domestic talent and strong defensive organisation.
