Zinedine Ferhat Left Out of Algeria’s World Cup Squad: A Disappointing Blow for the Young Midfielder
Algerian national team coach Vahid Halilhodzic has named his 30-man pre-selection for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, leaving out rising star Zinedine Ferhat. The USM Alger midfielder, who had made a significant impact in the Algerian league this season, will not be part of the squad for the prestigious tournament.
The list, which includes five local players and 25 internationals playing abroad, does not feature the 21-year-old, much to his disappointment. Ferhat, who has been in top form for USM Alger, had hoped to secure a place in the national team, particularly after his impressive performances in both domestic competitions and African club tournaments.
Ferhat did not hide his frustration with the decision, sharing his thoughts with Algerian sports website Lebuteur.com. “I’m disappointed, of course. I thought I’d be at least among the 30, but the national coach decided otherwise. He says I’m still young and the future is mine, and well, I’ll try to be patient,” the young midfielder said.
Despite Halilhodzic’s reasoning that Ferhat’s lack of international experience was the key factor in his exclusion, the USM Alger player disagrees with this justification. “It’s true that I’m only 21 years old, but honestly, I don’t agree at all with the coach’s comments. I want you to know that last year, I won the double (Algerian Cup and Arab Cup) and that this season too, I’m winning titles with USMA (Super Cup and the championship). I’ve also taken part in African competitions with the club and I think the argument of inexperience doesn’t really hold water.”
Ferhat’s exclusion marks a tough moment in his young career, but his talents have not gone unnoticed. The midfielder has caught the eye of clubs abroad, with Montpellier reportedly interested in signing him, which suggests that the future remains bright for the promising player. While he won’t be on the plane to Brazil, Ferhat is likely to use this setback as fuel for his continued development and future success.
