Vincent Aboubakar’s standout performances this season with Lorient have illuminated the French Ligue 1, marking a significant chapter in his career. Despite experiencing disappointment with Cameroon during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where they were eliminated after three defeats in the group stage, Aboubakar approaches the upcoming tournament in Brazil with optimism and determination.
With less than a month before the new adventure, Aboubakar is eager to contribute to Cameroon’s campaign. Recognizing the challenges ahead, particularly in a difficult group alongside the host country Brazil, Croatia, and Mexico, the Indomitable Lion remains hopeful of making an impact.
“The World Cup is a very challenging competition, and we must learn from our past failures in 2010. Despite being in a tough group again, I believe Cameroon can still spring a surprise. With a strong collective will to defend our colors, I believe that we can rely on divine intervention,” he expresses, drawing strength from his faith.
At just 22 years old, Aboubakar looks up to the seasoned veteran Samuel Eto’o for guidance and inspiration. Having played alongside Eto’o on numerous occasions, Aboubakar admires him as a remarkable striker and leader who elevates the team’s performance and serves as a role model for younger players. He also holds immense respect for Roger Milla, another legendary figure whom he had the privilege of meeting, acknowledging their influence not only in Cameroon but across Africa, both on and off the field.
